One of the most common questions we get at SMH Events is: how much space do I actually need? It sounds simple, but get it wrong and you’ll either be squeezing guests in or paying for space you don’t need. Here’s how we think about it.
Start With Your Guest Numbers
The basic rule of thumb for a seated dinner is roughly 1.5 to 2 square metres per person. So for 50 guests sitting down for a meal, you’re looking at a minimum of 75 to 100 square metres of floor space — that’s around a 9m x 9m or 9m x 12m marquee.
For a standing reception or drinks party you can get away with less — around 1 square metre per person — but most events involve at least some seated element so it’s worth planning for that.
What Else Takes Up Space?
Guest numbers are only part of the equation. You also need to account for:
- Dance floor — typically 3m x 3m for up to 50 guests, larger for bigger events
- Bar area — allow at least 2m x 2m, more if you’re running a full service bar
- Stage or DJ setup — a standard DJ setup needs around 3m x 2m minimum
- Catering space — if caterers are working inside the marquee rather than a separate kitchen tent
- Guest flow — people need to move around comfortably, especially near entrances
A good rule: take your seated guest space, then add 30–40% on top for everything else. That usually lands you in the right place.
Our Marquee Size Guide
Here’s how our sizes roughly map to guest numbers for a seated dinner with a dance floor:
- 4m x 6m — up to 25 guests
- 6m x 9m — 30 to 50 guests
- 9m x 9m — 50 to 75 guests
- 9m x 12m — 75 to 100 guests
- 12m x 15m — 100 to 150 guests
- 12m x 18m — 150 to 200 guests
Does the Shape of Your Garden Matter?
Yes — and more than people expect. A long, narrow garden might rule out a 9m wide marquee even if the length is there. Access for our vehicles and equipment also needs to be factored in, especially for larger structures.
If you’re unsure, we offer free site visits across London, Essex and Kent. We’ll come and look at the space with you and tell you honestly what will and won’t work.
The Bottom Line
When in doubt, go slightly bigger. You’ll never regret having a bit more space — but you will regret guests feeling cramped on what should be a great day.
